The Pearl essay

The rough draft of this essay will be handwritten. Remember to write neatly and in complete sentences with proper punctuation. As a reminder: ’s makes something possessive (like Kino’s boat). People’s names start with capital letters; periods belong at the end of sentences; there is a difference between there, their, and they’re, and you should know which one needs to be used. If you aren’t sure about how to spell something-use a dictionary. This is English class- this is what we do.
In literature as in life, a character often undergoes change when faced with an obstacle. In John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, Kino changes throughout the course of the novel once he finds the pearl of the world. In a five paragraph essay explain how Kino changes from the beginning of the novel, to the middle, and then at the end.
Paragraph 1 (Introduction) The introduction must include the title, the author, a brief overall summary of the novel, and the claim (what you are proving- this is what is bolded up above- write it word for word please).
Paragraph 2 Depict Kino at the beginning of the novel. Things to think about: What did he think about his life? How was his relationship with his wife? Friends? World around him? Include one direct quote with proper citation to support your ideas.
Paragraph 3 Depict Kino in the middle of the novel. Things to think about: What has changed in his life? Why has it changed? How is his thinking different from how it was at the beginning? Does he act differently? Why? Include one direct quote with proper citation to support your ideas.
Paragraph 4 Depict Kino at the end of the novel. Things to think about: What has changed in his life? How has it affected him? How is he acting differently than he did at beginning or middle? With whom does he act differently? Why? Include one direct quote with proper citation to support your ideas.
Paragraph 5 (conclusion) Your conclusion must include the title again along with the claim. Give some closing remarks on the overall change in Kino. Things to think about: Was it ultimately for the better or for the worse? Will he ever be as he was again? Why or why not?
